TANZANIA DROPS 57 PLACES ON BUSINESS INDEX

Three reports - Africa Competiveness, Investment Climate and Doing Business 2010 - all highlighting Tanzania’s deteriorating business environment were presented to the workshop. The Doing Business 2010 report, the seventh in a series of annual reports by the World Bank investigating regulations that enhance or constrain business activities, ranks Tanzania the 131st out of 183 economies investigated, with Singapore toping the list as the easiest place to do business. Tanzania has deteriorated in two consecutive years; it first dropped from number 124 in 2008 to 127 in the 2009 report. In the 2010 report, Tanzania’s worst score is on dealing with construction permits, where the report says it takes a whopping 328 days to fulfil the 22 procedures required to build a warehouse, whose cost is estimated at 3,281 per cent of the country’s per capita income.
